Prepare USB-Stick for recording

Introduction

2D uses a unique method to write data onto the memory stick.

Before using a stick for the first time, the program Prep2DStick has to be used, which installs the specific 2D file system on the USB Stick.

This file system contains of so called containers (.000 files) in which recording data is stored by logger.

Only this ensures that all data are saved and the file system is accessible even if the USB stick is removed from the logging device while working (hotplug).

Attention

Basically every USB Stick can be formatted and used for recording data with 2D Sticklogger, but the USB Stick must have a high data rate! Therefore it is recommended to use the USB Sticks provided by 2D!

Important information

  • Only prepared USB Sticks can be used for logging data from 2D Sticklogger

  • At preparation, on USB-Stick logging containers (.000) are created in which measurement data is written

  • At data download the containers are cleared automatically by software

  • Amount and size of containers depends on data rate (at Streamlogging every at logger received CAN-ID is stored!)

  • If a container is full, a new container is used (if no free container is available, no recording is possible until data is downloaded from USB stick)

  • Every new container result in a new 2D measurement (.MES)

  • When using KL30, at every powering a logger a new container on stick is taken for storing data (so a new 2D measurement is created)

  • When using KL15, the currently used container is taken for storing data (so switching logger via KL15 will not create a new 2D measurement, only when container is full)

Prepare USB-Stick for usage in 2D USB Sticklogger

  1. Plugin USB-Stick to format to PC and open shown menu

_images/Menu3.png
  1. Select File size in [MB] and number of data files to create

    Attention

    Amount and size of containers depends on data rate (at Streamlogging every at logger received CAN-ID is stored!) and thus on your application!

  1. When opening USB Stick in Windows after formatting by 2D Software there is data on the Stick (required containers).

    Attention

    Do not delete/format Stick when it should be used for recording! Preparing USB-Stick for next recording is managed by software automatically!

Examples

Example 1

Assumed data rate: 20 kB/s (corresponds KIT system data rate)

Container size: 256 MB

Amount of containers: 16

T_Container = 256 MB / 0.020 MB/s = 12800 s –> 213 minutes

Attention

One container would be full in about 213 minutes and thus one measurement would be max. 213 minutes.

T_Total = T_Container * Amount of containers = 213 minutes * 16 = 3413 minutes –> 56 hours

Attention

Total recording time of this formatted USB Stick would be 56 h in total but 16 individual measurements with max. 213 minutes are created!

Example 2

Assumed data rate: 150 kB/s (150 kB/s is a high data rate)

Container size: 256 MB

Amount of containers: 16

T_Container = 256 MB / 0.150 MB/s = 1706.6 s –> 28.44 minutes

Attention

One container would be full in about 28 minutes and thus one measurement would be max. 28 minutes.

T_Total = T_Container * Amount of containers = 28.44 minutes * 16 = 455.04 minutes –> 7.6 hours

Attention

Total recording time of this formatted USB Stick would be 7.6 h in total but 16 individual measurements with max. 28 minutes are created!

Example 3

Assumed data rate: 150 kB/s (150 kB/s is a high data rate)

Container size: 1000 MB

Amount of containers: 20

T_Container = 1000 MB / 0.150 MB/s = 6666.6 s –> 111 minutes

Attention

One container would be full in about 111 minutes and thus one measurement would be max. 111 minutes.

T_Total = T_Container * Amount of containers = 111 minutes * 20 = 2220 minutes –> 37 hours

Attention

Total recording time of this formatted USB Stick would be 37 h in total but 20 individual measurements with max. 111 minutes are created!
